Assistant or Associate Research Professor in Epidemiology or Biostatistics
The Graduate Program in Public Health at University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service invites applications for a Research Faculty position (Assistant or Associate) in Public Health, with an emphasis on epidemiology or biostatistics. The position will also involve an adjunct faculty appointment with the Maine Medical Center Research Institute’s Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. This is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track position that begins January 1, 2018, or as soon as possible. This position is fully funded for 2.5 years, with support from the Maine Economic Improvement Fund, the state’s research and development funding. Continued employment of the selected candidate after the first 2.5 years will be contingent upon the availability of academic and research funding.
We are seeking candidates who can be a strategic leader in our work in health informatics, and drive a research agenda around public health and health data. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in teaching and in building our graduate program. He or she will teach a 1-1 teaching load in the Graduate Program in Public Health, as well as participating in advising and curriculum development.
Faculty in the Graduate Program in Public Health hold appointments in the Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy. The Cutler Institute has a broad portfolio of local, state and nationally-funded research, evaluation, and technical assistance programs and projects spanning population health and health policy, disability and aging, child and family policy and justice policy. The Institute has 120 faculty and staff and over $18M in external federal, state, and foundation support.
We are seeking candidates with a range of skills and research experience that may include data analytics, data visualization, predictive modeling, manipulating large and complex databases, and applying advanced statistical techniques to population health and health services research. The ability to work effectively with external partners, researchers, faculty and students is critical to the success of this position.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of appointment.

Required: A Ph.D. degree in public health with a focus on epidemiology or biostatistics or a related field with a strong public health emphasis is required. This position requires experience in applied research. Area of specialization is open; however, candidates should possess a sufficiently broad skill set to serve a diverse set of research and analytic needs. Candidates must demonstrate strengths in statistical programming and data management. The successful candidate must also demonstrate the promise of sustaining an extramurally funded research program through a record of scholarship, including grant writing experience and publication of peer-reviewed literature.
Preferred: A record of self-supporting research funding. Strong commitment to graduate education, including teaching and curriculum development. Evidence of commitment to diversity, student success and active learning, and community engagement. Desire to help build USM’s public health research portfolio in the area of data analytics. Leadership experience and the ability to lead an interdisciplinary team.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience.
