UNMC’s Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) hosted their annual Skills Night for the College of Medicine Class of 2020 on November 16.

The evening focused on skills for the objective structured clinical examination. Students practiced sutures, injections, and IV insertion in the MSC Clinical Simulation Lab.

Family Medicine faculty members Dr. Mindy Lacey and Dr. Monty Mathews were also on hand to assist as students learned all about needles.

Dr. Liu’s new role for SHARING clinics

Department of Family Medicine Assistant Professor, Jennifer Liu, M.D., was named the 2016-17 chair of the faculty advisory board for the SHARING clinic.

SHARING is UNMC’s student-run clinic that provides high-quality, low-cost health care to those in need. SHARING’s faculty advisory board offers support and guidance to the interprofessional students involved.

“I’m excited to be working with the student to help promote and support their mission. They are a passionate group and are the ones that are doing most of the work – providing care, managing the clinic, and raising funds,” Dr. Liu said.

Congratulations, Dr. Liu!

Faculty Members Set Goals at Annual Retreat

Department of Family Medicine faculty gathered on Saturday, November 12 at the UNO Thompson Center for their annual retreat.

Led by department chairman Dr. Michael Sitorius, the conversation was centered around the topic, “What is our (your) future academic role?”.

The goal was to create a 1-3 year vision surrounding topics within the department. The group focused on creating concrete action items and next steps for the future.

Topics discussed included Medical School Education, Residency Education, Quality and Patient Safety, Scholarly Activity, and Career Development.

Small group sessions and large group discussions gave attendees time to think about the next steps for the department.
