The federal medical research landscape in the United States is supported by a variety of agencies that spend billions to seek answers to a wide range of health challenges. While the largest is NIH, the Defense Department has numerous offices that fund medical and biological research, from basic research to advanced development. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Veterans Affairs, NASA, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture also fund biomedical research and health-related programs. To help with these agencies, UNMC works with Brian Detter, a leading consultant knowledgeable about obtaining federal grants outside of NIH.
