Dr. Claire Adams joins Geriatric Division

Claire Adams, MD, has joined the UNMC Department of Psychiatry in the Geriatrics Division.

Dr. Adams graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine in 2019 and matched with the University of Arizona on April 3, 2019. After finishing her residency, she accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry.

“I had a great experience when I was a medical student at UNMC and was always impressed by the quality of clinicians and educators,” Dr. Adams said. “There are really compassionate people here, from the physicians to nurses to social workers to support staff, so that was a huge reason I wanted to come back.”

Adams has long been interested in geriatrics, and credits former faculty member and geriatric psychiatrist Thomas Magnuson, MD, for showing her the importance of working with patients in very vulnerable states.

“My first exposure to psychiatry was here at UNMC in the geriatric psychiatry clinic,” Dr. Adams said. “I enjoyed it from the beginning. I like learning my patients’ life stories and love the collaboration with other disciplines within medicine that is essential to treat this population.”

Steven Wengel, MD, Department of Psychiatry Geriatric Division Director, said the division could not be happier to welcome Dr. Adams back to Omaha and UNMC.

“Dr. Adams’ dedication to providing the best possible care to the older adults of our region is clear, including having just completed her geriatric psychiatry fellowship,” Dr. Wengel said. “She will make a real difference in the lives of those deserving patients and is also an incredibly caring and friendly new member of the team. Welcome aboard!”

Along with treating patients, Dr. Adams will be a part of the teaching faculty at UNMC.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to educate medical students and residents and provide them with exposure to the field of geriatric psychiatry,” Dr. Adams said.

Dr. Adams moved back to Omaha this fall and started in the Department of Psychiatry on Nov. 1, 2024.

“I’m most excited to be back in Omaha to be closer to family and friends and to raise my own family here,” she said.
