The Department of Psychiatry welcomed five new residents this month.
Brittany Bamberg, MD, University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine; Jacob Dines, DO, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine; Brett Jesse, MD, UNMC; Tony Le, MD, UNMC; and Jacob Moore, MD, UNMC, have started residency training.
The five matched with UNMC on March 15, 2024. Shortly after discovering he was staying in Omaha, Dr. Jesse said he was excited to continue training at UNMC. Dr. Moore said he wanted to stay in Nebraska to fill a need for psychiatrists in the state.
Dr. Bamberg said UNMC was her top choice to do her residency.
“I graduated from medical school in South Dakota, and I was looking for a program with a similar smaller feel,” she said. “I feel like at UNMC I can learn well in a comfortable environment.”
Dr. Le graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine and hoped to stay in Omaha.
“This was the lone program where I could be 100 percent confident that I will be comfortable,” he said. “I know the faculty. I know how things work. During my psychiatry rotation in medical school, I really felt valued as a learner, and I felt part of the team. That respect is very valuable, because I know it would not change when I became a resident.”
Dr. Dines said he wanted to come to UNMC after learning about the department’s WISE program, which, among other principles, focuses on resident wellness.
“Along with the learning, I like that wellness is important in the program,” said Dr. Dines, a flight surgeon in the US Navy, before matching with UNMC.
The Department of Psychiatry has 19 residents. Since it was re-established in 2020, the program has seen six residents graduate or transfer to fellowship programs. The list includes Matthew Kelly, MD; Andi Ngo, MD; and Emily Royer, MD, who graduated this year.
