10% of this year’s medical school class at UNMC are first-generation students, meaning neither of their parents hold a bachelor’s or higher degree. First-generation students face a number of barriers in their pursuit of postsecondary education, and research shows that first-gen students are half as likely as their peers to enroll in graduate programs after college. Additionally, about half of first-gen undergraduate students are from minoritized backgrounds and 50-60% of Hispanic undergraduates are first-gen.
