Subway Tessellates Cheese

In the spirit of information sharing, Adam Stevens in CT/MRI has offered up some fun math facts, which I’ll be sharing on the blog and Bennett TV monitors. Here’s the first installment:

Tessellation (or Tiling) is a pattern of shapes that fit perfectly together.

Historically (pre 2010), Subway sandwich artists placed cheese on sandwiches in a semi-random (i.e. non-tessellating) pattern resulting in uneven cheese coverage and a less than satisfying sandwich experience. Due to an outcry from the Internet, however, Subway began tessellating their cheese as of June 1, 2010.  This fact was verified 7/17/12 by a  Sandwich Artist at the Omaha, NE North 24th street Subway location who stated,  “we place the cheese in a top to bottom pattern for more uniform cheese coverage.”
