Set aside, for just a day, what you heard about George Washington never telling a lie and the warning of Pinocchio’s long nose. April Fool’s Day is coming and it’s time to prepare some good whoppers.
Talent Tuesday is here to help.
Employees are invited to participate in UNMC’s first Liar’s Contest, set for noon, Tuesday, March 29, in the Eppley Amphitheater. The bigger the tale, the better.
Prepare a five-minute, work-appropriate, tall tale to tell at the contest, which will be judged by three respected UNMC faculty members – a librarian, a lawyer and a psychiatrist. In other words, our judges have read them all, told them all and heard them all.
Judges are:
* Nancy Woelfl, Ph.D., director and professor, McGoogan Library of Medicine;
* Rick Spellman, J.D., associate general counsel health sciences; and
* Chanel Helgason, M.D., assistant professor, psychiatry.
Prizes worthy of showing off with pride will go to:
* First place — Best liar at UNMC
* Second place — Purt near the best liar at UNMC
* Third place — Nigh on becoming the best liar at UNMC
Stories will be judged on technique, originality and story development — a good beginning, middle and end.
The second part of the program will feature Fran Higgins, administrative associate in the School of Allied Health Professions. In observance of St. Patrick’s Day, she will sing Irish songs and encourage a sing-a-long.
Higgins has played locally in bars and coffee shops for about 11 years. She kicked off the Talent Tuesday series last fall and came up with the initial idea for the event.
