Flores, Waltman, and Bilek to present findings of 5-year trial at national conference

Prevention of Osteoporosis is a hot topic!

Laura Flores, BA, Nancy Waltman, PhD, and Laura Bilek, PhD, are studying bone loss across the lifespan and the best ways to prevent it, both with exercise and with medicine.

Dr. Bilek’s lab is interested in how to keep bones healthy across all populations, including pediatric cancer patients, persons undergoing bariatric surgery, and postmenopausal women.

Their abstract, “Bone Loading Exercises Versus Risedronate for the Prevention of Osteoporosis in Postmenopausal Women with Low Bone Mass,” was selected as one of only 100 oral presentations at the upcoming 2021 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), to be held in San Diego.

This study was recently accepted for publication in Osteoporosis International, and it was highlighted as a “hot topic” in a recent ASBMR advertisement for the Annual Meeting.

The team was multidisciplinary and cross-institutional, including members from the College of Nursing (Dr. Waltman and Kevin Kupzyk, PhD), College of Allied Health Professions (Dr. Bilek and Laura Flores), Department of Endocrinology (Lynn Mack), and Creighton University (Joan Lappe, PhD).
