In the Allied Health Organization catalogue you will find SAHPRD1. It is a work in progress, but please check back for links to recorded Research Seminars and other valuable information.

SAHP — Setting the Bar

January 27th, 2009

by Fran Higgins 1/27/2009

I attended the UNMC Web-Developers meeting last week and was pleased to see our SAHP website used as an example for the campus. Out of the 43 projects already converted to the Red Dot web management system, 22 were in Allied Health. Leaders!

A few weeks ago, I received a call from another department on campus who wished to emulate our homepage. Imitation = flattery!Of course, I had to give props to Anne Faylor in IT who helped make it happen, but I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work of the allied health team who updated our website:

Diane Landon, Maggie Winnicki, Gail Hackendahl, Cindy Skarda, Tanya Custer, Linsey Donner, and me, Fran Higgins. Way to go, gang!

Cytotechnology Students Visit Millard Elementary School

January 27th, 2009

by Amber Donnelly 1/27/2009

On January 22, 2009, the Cytotechnology students were guests at the Willa Cather Elementary School Core Academy Program.  The Cytotechnology program was asked to speak to the 2nd-grade classrooms about cells.  So, the Cytotechnology students packed up their microscopes and laboratory supplies and headed out West.
The cytotechnology students helped the 2nd-graders take samples of cells from their cheeks and make cytologic slides.  Then, the children were able to stain their slides and view them under a microscope.  There were also several other learning activities for the 2nd-graders, such as a matching game that featured images of cells and a felt body with internal organs and pictures of cells from each organ.  They were also able to make respiratory cells and liver cells out of fun crafting materials.
The 2nd-graders were very attentive and inquisitive.  One of the Cytotechnology students told me that we have recruited several future students into the Cytotechnology Program.  Too bad we will have to wait about 14 years before they apply.
We received 43 thank you letters from the 2nd-graders, all stating how much fun they had and how much they learned.  Our time at the elementary school was well spent.  Here are a few quotes:
“It was fun looking through the microscope.  When I grow up I want to be a scientist.”
“It was awesome that you came to our classroom.”
“It was unbelievable.  I learned a lot.”
“I didn’t know I had so much cells in my mouth.  I hope I do this again.”
“I will remember this day when I saw my own cells.”

Winners from SAHP Distance Ed!

January 22nd, 2009

Michelle Simon of SAHP Distance Education has correctly identified Fran’s whereabouts in the latest “Where in UNMC…”: In the skywalk between Swanson Hall and the DRC, and Elephanto is in her pocket!

Maggie Winnicki, also from SAHP Distance Education correctly identified the holiday edition photos: #1 was taken outside our old offices in Swanson Hall, but with a tricky photoshop of Dr. Meyer in Bennett Hall imposed into the old shadow box! :)
#2 was taken outside the 5th floor of Wittson Hall on the veranda. (The Dean’s Business office used to be over there.) Apparently, this was a good picture to post, as Maggie got some exercise trying to find the location! In addition, she correctly identified the book in the picture (not required, but a good bonus) which was The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac.
