Dr. Blankenau graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine in 2022, and last month he completed his residency in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry.

Erin Ranum, MD, Geriatric Division Director, said Dr. Blankenau’s knowledge of the department will help him hit the ground running.

“It’s huge,” Dr. Ranum said. “He knows the computer system. He knows where to find all the resources. He already has a patient panel and has people scheduled for follow-up visits. He knows it all.”

Dr. Blankenau will spend three weeks each month in geriatrics and one week in addictions. He said he’s excited to work with the current geriatric staff, including Steven Wengel, MD, who has been in the division since 1991.

“I really appreciate all the mentors I have here. My goal is to soak up as much wisdom and knowledge as I can,” Dr. Blankenau said. “I’ve gotten to work with Dr. Wengel very closely, and we plan on continuing to have some meetings to keep me growing as a clinician. It’s a great resource for me to have as a young professional.”

Dr. Blankenau’s first day was July 1, 2026.

“I’m very excited to join the faculty and keep doing stuff I really enjoy,” he said.
