Veterans discuss how serving in the Armed Forces led them to work in behavioral healthcare

On Veterans Day and throughout the year, the Department of Psychiatry is proud to highlight many current and former U.S. military members making a difference at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.

Chase Brice, Department of Psychiatry Clinical Research Associate, joined the staff in July. He said serving as an officer in the U.S. Army gave him a deep sense of purpose that carried into his new role in behavioral healthcare.

“Leading soldiers taught me to look beyond my own needs and focus on the well-being and success of others,” Brice said. “Both in the military and in behavioral health, progress comes from teamwork, compassion, and a shared commitment to something greater than ourselves. My service helped me see the bigger picture, stay grounded under pressure, and consistently prioritize people’s needs. These values continue to guide me every day.”

Madison Nolan, a medical receptionist in the Psychiatry Clinic, joined the staff in April. Prior to working at Nebraska Medicine, she worked for the Army Corps of Engineers as an administrative assistant.

“I made a lot of connections and learned so many things, but I knew I wanted a future working in health care, so I decided to make a switch,” Nolan said.

Logan Ford, MD, U.S. Army, accepted a position as an assistant professor in July.

The three joined a psychiatry department staff with a large contingent of veterans, including Stephen Salzbrenner, MD, who said his time in the U.S. Navy helped him develop leadership skills and flexibility.

“It also gave me the ability to treat a diverse variety of patients and conditions,” said Dr. Salzbrenner. “It has come in handy throughout my career, especially when there were leadership opportunities or challenges that required creative solutions.”

Along with the thirteen Department of Psychiatry faculty and staff members who have served in the military, there are also many spouses of employees who have served.

“Freedom requires great sacrifice, and I wanted to thank our department’s veterans, National Guard, Reserves, and family members of service members for your courageous service,” said Howard Liu, MD, MBA, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. “Thank you for bringing your dedication to teamwork to every mission we have in psychiatry, from clinical care to the academic mission. You are continuing to save lives through your service and sacrifice every day, and we appreciate you!”
