Ten members of the UNMC psychiatry community traveled to Boston for the annual Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) Conference June 19-21, 2025.

The UNMC Department of Psychiatry plays a significant leadership role at ADMSEP as the only institution with 2 past presidents (Dr. Carl Greiner, Dr. Howard Liu). The 2025 Assistant Program Chair, Dr. Raml, and the 2025 Faculty Development Committee Chair, Dr. Riley Machal, are also highly engaged in the organization. And UNMC psychiatry residency program coordinator, Ellie Corbaley, serves as the administrator organizing the annual meeting.

Melissa O’Dell, MD, attended the conference for the first time in 2025.

“It was a highlight to meet so many wonderful people, who also happen to be passionate and talented educators,” Dr. O’Dell said. “The workshops and talks I attended were all quite relevant and helpful.”

Jeana Benton, MD; Jake Givens, MD; Riley Machal, MD; Monica Nava Frenier, MD; Howard Liu, MD, MBA; Melissa O’Dell, MD; Dana Raml, MD, and Marie Bernard, a fourth-year UNMC medical student, presented at the conference.

Daniel Gih, Vice-Chair for Education in the Department of Psychiatry, said the department always sends a large group because ADMSEP is an essential organizational home for many of our clinician-educators.

“Our students and faculty have found the meeting to be a great way to build collegial networks and eager collaborators for future projects,” Dr. Gih said. “Likewise, faculty members have successfully included residents and medical students every year in presentations, which helps introduce the next generation to the organization and academic medicine.”

Dr. Liu chaired a plenary presentation on AI and institutional policy with Bernard, Dr. Darlene King from UT Southwestern, Dr. Amanda Harris from Northwell Zucker-Hillside and Dr. Timothy Kreider from Northwell Zucker Hillside.

Dr. Nava Frenier, a third-year resident, said she was excited to meet psychiatrists who shared her passion for medical education.

“It was beneficial to hear others’ points of view and gain the insight to what alternative options there are in providing excellent medical student education,” she said.
