Dr. Donovick honored for work on expanding forensic fellowship

Roger Donovick, MD, Medical Officer for the Lincoln Regional Center, received the Department of Psychiatry Chair’s Distinguished Service Award for his advocacy for the new Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship.

Department of Psychiatry Chair Howard Liu, MD, MBA, presented the award to Dr. Donovick.

“Dr. Roger Donovick, who is an addiction psychiatrist and NE DHHS leader, is instrumental for our partnership with the Lincoln Regional Center,” Dr. Liu said. “He has been a key supporter for our new UNMC Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship and a true visionary for public and academic partnership for growing Nebraska’s workforce.”

The fellowship received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in June 2025. The fellow will spend the year in Sarpy County, as well as Omaha and Lancaster counties, working in the legal system and state hospitals such as the Lincoln Regional Center, learning how to navigate those systems, how to do psychiatric forensic evaluations and reports, and how to provide treatment for people in those settings. In 2021, UNMC and Sarpy County agreed to partner on the fellowship. Dr. Donovick, who works in Lancaster County, played a key role in expanding the fellowship into Lincoln.

“UNMC is a valuable partner to the state, and I feel there will be even more opportunities to work together in the future,” Dr. Donovick said.
