Meet the curator: obstetrics and midwifery rare books viewing

Did you know that the McGoogan Health Sciences Library is continually acquiring new items to build the special collections and archives? The library relies on book donations from the campus and community, but there are also donor funds for purchasing rare books. One of the most prolific areas of collection for McGoogan Library is in midwifery and obstetrics, where the books range from the Middle Ages to the late Victorian era.

On October 4, 2023, from 11 am to 1 pm, the campus community is invited to drop in on Level 8 of the library to tour the rare book room with Rare Books Librarian Erin Torell. Visitors will see and learn about medicine’s evolution of understanding around the nature and science of birth. Be among the first to see the newest addition to the collection, “Theoretical and Practical Instructions for the Use of Students” by Marguerite Guillomance Coutanceau. This is one of two existing copies of this 19th-century French midwifery instruction book on the best practices of birth for the time.

A virtual session will be held on October 5 from 12 pm to 1 pm. Using document cameras, attendees will get up close and personal with the books as if you were in the room with them. The public is welcome to attend. Zoom registration is required.

Both events have been approved for 1 CME credit from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
