The Master of Genetic Counseling program is proud to announce the recipients of its annual awards, recognizing faculty and staff who precept, educate, and overall support the mission of the program. This program is housed in the College of Allied Health Professions and in partnership with the Munroe Meyer Institute.
Inspiring Confidence Through Education
The Outstanding Educator Award, presented “in recognition of dedication to excellence in education,” was awarded to Drew Cratsenberg, Assistant Professor at the Munroe Meyer Institute. Drew’s commitment to student learning and engagement has made a meaningful impact on the program and students alike. In his medical genetics courses, he fosters both curiosity and confidence, helping students build a strong foundation as they progress through the program.
Reflecting on receiving the award, Drew shared:
“I feel very honored to have received this award. One of my favorite parts about working with our graduate students is seeing the growth in their knowledge from the beginning of the program to graduation. Receiving recognition from the students via this award helps solidify that my approaches to teaching the medical genetics courses spark their interest and gives them confidence in learning this content!”
Drew’s dedication to education and student success exemplifies the spirit of this award.
Empowering Students in Clinical Training
Hannah Steber was recognized with the Outstanding Supervisor Award, presented in recognition of excellence in clinical supervision. Hannah is a pediatric genetic counselor at the Munroe Meyer Institute, sees patients at Children’s Nebraska, and has a courtesy faculty appointment in the College of Allied Health Professions. As both an alumna of the program and a dedicated clinical supervisor, Hannah brings insight, encouragement, and authenticity to her work with students. Her mentorship creates an environment where trainees feel supported as they develop confidence, clinical skills, and their own counseling style.
Hannah had this to say after receiving the award:
“As a former trainee of the program, it is so gratifying to receive the Outstanding Supervisor Award! I love that I have the opportunity to share back with the home where I started my career. Students bring such a fresh perspective, and it is genuinely so fun to see them grow and progress over an 8-week fieldwork placement.”
Hannah emphasized empowerment and transparency in her supervision approach, helping students prepare for the realities of clinical practice while encouraging them to develop their own professional identity.
“These awards reflect the incredible dedication, mentorship, and passion our faculty and supervisors bring to the education of future genetic counselors,” said Sara Fisher, Assistant Program Director. “We are deeply grateful for the meaningful impact they have on our students, the program, and the profession as a whole.”
Congratulations to this year’s award recipients on these well-deserved honors!
