
UNMC Department of Psychiatry Chair Howard Liu, MD, MBA, was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP) in February 2025.
The American College of Psychiatrists is a society of 600 psychiatrists who have demonstrated excellence in the field. Fellows need to demonstrate substantial contributions to the field of psychiatry through research, clinical practice, or leadership roles. Dr. Liu has twice served on the ACP’s program committee and currently serves as vice chair of the ACP Finance Committee. He is a past recipient of the ACP’s Creativity in Psychiatric Education Award.
Dr. Liu is the chair of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry, a tenured professor in the UNMC College of Medicine, the chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Communications, the co-chair of the World Psychiatric Association’s Medical Student Interest Group, and the past president of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry.
Previous roles at UNMC include the Director of the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN), Psychiatry Clerkship Director, and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty Development. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and an Honorary Member of the World Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Liu said he wanted to thank his former program director, Gene Beresin, MD, MA, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, his first mentor and past APA President, Dr. Michelle Riba, and to Interim Chancellor at UNMC, Dr. H. Dele Davies, for inspiring him to keep growing through different leadership roles.
“I’m so thankful that I was given a chance to see so many principled, effective leaders at every stage of my career. We need to continue raising up the next generation who will lead us into the future,” Dr. Liu stated.
