The National Library of Medicine exhibit Confronting Violence: Improving Women’s Lives, guest curated by historian and educator Catherine Jacquet, PhD (Louisiana State University), will be on display on level 8 of the McGoogan Health Sciences Library from July 31-September 9, 2023.
The traveling exhibition and companion website tell the story of nurses working to reform a medical profession that failed to acknowledge domestic violence as a health issue and not a legal matter. Beginning in the late 1970s, these nurses were in the vanguard as they pushed the larger medical community to identify victims, adequately respond to their needs, and work towards the prevention of domestic violence. An online exhibit is also available. The National Library of Medicine produced this exhibition and companion website.
Coinciding with the exhibit will be a virtual panel presentation titled “Confronting Domestic Violence: What Providers Need to Know” on August 3, 12-1 p.m. UNMC and Nebraska Medicine-affiliated experts will speak about the resources and services available for responding to concerns around domestic violence. The panel will feature Kate Buehler, BSN, RN, CEN; Bradley Ekwerekwu, Phd; Catherine Medici-Thiemann, PhD; and Tiffany Moore, PhD, RN, SANE-A. Registration is required for the Zoom link. A student-focused event is forthcoming and will be shared across student channels.
Biographies of Panelists
Kate Buehler, BSN, RN, CEN, is the nurse manager for the Nebraska Medicine Bellevue Emergency Department. She has 10 years of emergency medicine experience. She has a passion for caring and advocating for patients who have experienced sexual violence, domestic violence, and/or human trafficking. She joined the Nebraska Medicine forensic nursing program in 2014. She had the opportunity to lead the forensic team from 2020 through 2022 and continues to be a contributing partner.
Bradley Ekwerekwu, PhD, works with the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties and the Men Against Domestic Violence Action Coalition as the Education Chair. This appointment allows him to influence various learning environments by sharing his research, providing empowering education, and actively engaging individuals in action plans. Drawing from various lived experiences, Dr. Brad continues to spread influence and motivation toward healthy relationships and progressive mindsets.
Catherine Medici-Thiemann, PhD, is coordinator of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) at UNMC. She received her PhD in history from UNL with a specialization in women’s and gender studies. She has taught women’s and gender studies and medical humanities since 2012. Her research focuses on women’s networks and political agency as well as women, gender, and chronic illness. As coordinator of the GSRC, she developed and facilitates safe space training for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and supports student groups and programming on issues of women, gender, and sexuality across campus. Dr. Medici-Thiemann is a confidential victim advocate for victims of sexual and intimate partner violence on campus.
Tiffany Moore, PhD, RN, SANE-A, is an Associate Professor at the College of Nursing at UNMC. Currently, Dr. Moore serves as the Interim Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Nursing. Dr. Moore is a nurse scientist with research focusing on the effects of chronic stress on mom and baby. Clinically, Dr. Moore is a Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) for CHI Health on a PRN basis where she cares for patients who have experienced intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault. She has worked as an FNE since 2019 and has earned her Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification. Dr. Moore also served as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Project Harmony, the Child Advocacy Center in Omaha in 2021/2022, and has worked as a camp nurse for children in the foster care system for over 15 years.
