NE LB506 Cancer and Smoking Research

Program Summary

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS) announced the Fiscal Year 2020 Cancer and Smoking Disease Research Funds grant competition. Funded by LB506, this program focuses on reducing cancer and smoking-related diseases. The program gives priority to scientific, technical or behavioral research proposals relating directly to the prevention of cancer and smoking-related diseases. Preferred applications will focus on innovative, new research that could support future proposals for external peer-reviewed funding.

Interested Principal Investigators (PIs) must submit applications to SPAdmin by Wednesday, January 2, 2019.


Up to $50,000 for the period of July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020

  • No indirect costs allowed
  • No salary support for the PI or other faculty on full-time appointments allowed
    • To minimize cost-share, PIs or other faculty should commit no more than 2% effort

Monday, Jan. 7, 2019 SPAdmin Applications due to NE DHHS Upon final review and authorized signature, SPAdmin will submit application/appendix to NE DHHS
Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019 PI/Dept. Protocol applications due to UNMC regulatory offices Submit IRB, IACUC, and IBC materials to the applicable UNMC regulatory office for approval by 5 PM
Tuesday, April 30, 2019 SPAdmin Protocol approvals due to NE DHHS Send verification of protocol approval for IRB, IACUC, and IBC to NE DHHS

Approvals required by this date or NE DHHS will consider the application incomplete and return without review

Saturday, June 1, 2019 NE DHHS announces awards
