Searle Scholars Program

Internal Submission Deadline:  Wednesday, August 1, 2018

The University of Nebraska has been invited to select one candidate to apply for the 2019 Searle Scholars Program Competition.  The Program awards funding for research related to medicine, chemistry, and the biological sciences.  Awardees receive $100,000 per year for three years.

Individuals who were nominated for awards last year but were not awarded still may meet the eligibility for criteria for the 2019 competition.  If you wish to nominate such an individual, please notify Dr. David Jackson in the Provost’s Office, and he will contact Searle’s scientific director to discuss the situation.

The Searle Program provided a sample application form in order to get an advanced view of the questions that will appear in the online application (contact the provost office to obtain a copy).  NOTE: This is NOT the actual application form.

Those who are eligible and wish to apply should plan to submit their current CVs and answers to the following questions using the format requested on the draft application form.  The UNMC applicants should be submit their draft to Deborah Hawkins in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research by email no later than 5:00 PM, Wednesday, August 1st.

    • Name
    • Campus address, phone number, and email (instead of “Institution Where Award will be Held”)
    • Title of Proposed Research
    • Major Areas of Doctoral and (if applicable) Post-Doctoral Research

    • Dissertation:  List the title of doctoral dissertation and provide brief summary and its importance to its field of study
    • Post-Doctoral Research:  Provide brief summary of post-doctoral research, telling its importance to its field of study (if applicable)

Each institution will forward to the Provost’s Office up to three candidates for consideration no later than August 17, 2018, based on their internal selection process.  Materials should be sent electronically to Cathy Robertus with a carbon-copy to David Jackson.

The Provost will ask the Selection Committee to review the applications and provide a recommendation no later than September 7.  The Provost’s Office then will submit the NU nominee through Searle’s online application system.  Once nominated, the NU applicant will receive an email with instructions to access the online system; once notified, the applicant will be able to refine his/her application materials with the assistance of campus proposal/award support staff.

The NU nominee should plan to submit his/her application online so that it is received prior to the September 28 deadline.  A copy of the nominee’s submitted materials also should be forwarded to the Provost’s Office.
