Laura Hansen, a MPH student in the Community Health Education concentration

Student Award and Scholarships Winners 2011 Carruth Wagner, MD, Scholarship in Public Health Laura Hansen has a passion for serving in underserved areas and battling health disparities. Last summer, that passion led her to travel to Thiotte, Haiti, where she volunteered in a make-shift medical clinic.  Upon her return, she began the Master of Public Health Program at UNMC, with a community health education concentration. Student Award and Scholarships Winners 2011 Carruth Wagner, MD, Scholarship in Public Health Janelle, a second-year doctoral student, has previous experience working with both state and local public health departments, which has informed her interest in implementing evidence-based public health programming and public health systems and services research. Anh Nguyen, a doctoral student in the Health Services Research, Administration, and Policy

Student Award and Scholarships Winners 2011 Carruth Wagner, MD, Scholarship in Public Health Anh is both a doctoral student and a health data analyst in the Department of Health Services Research and Administration, where she is actively involved in research design, methods, analysis, and interpretation on a variety of health services research projects. Anh is a graduate of the Colorado School of Public Health, where she earned a master of science in public health. Her main research interests include health services delivery, access, and utilization.

Lava Timilsina, doctoral student, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research

Student Award and Scholarships Winners 2011 Carruth Wagner, MD, Scholarship in Public Health Lava Timilsina received his MPH with a concentration in epidemiology from the College of Public Health. His MPH capstone project was focused on imipenem-resistant MDR acinetobacters in Douglas County, Nebraska. During his MPH program, he worked as a graduate research assistant and coauthored several manuscripts that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Diane Sylofski, 2011 Robert D. Sparks, MD, Public Health Research Student Award

Diane is a second-year doctoral student in the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research program and a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She worked as a group fitness instructor as an undergraduate, and as a graduate student, has an assistantship coordinating fitness programs for university students. Before returning to school to pursue her PhD, Diane worked as the fitness coordinator at the University of Florida, where she managed all aspects of the university’s group fitness program.
