Health Policy Short Course for Local Health Departments in Nebraska

At the final symposium of the Nebraska Health Policy Academy, members of the Central District Health Department team met to discuss their efforts to develop and implement a sugar-sweetened beverage policy. The Health Policy Short Course will build on the key parts of the Academy curriculum.

Dr. Jim Stimpson, associate professor, COPH Department of Health Services Research and Administration; Dr. Dave Palm, administrator, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Community Health and Performance Management; and Ms. Claudine McCarthy, graduate student in the COPH Department of Health Promotion, Social and Behavioral Health, are the team for this project. The UNMC COPH will partner with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to offer a short course in health policy for public health professionals located across the state. According to Dr. Palm, “This course will allow public health professionals to learn more about the basic elements of health policy and how effective health policies should be developed. The course will also prepare teams interested in securing additional experiential training to enter the Health Policy Academy, a current effort within the COPH that aims to engage teams of state, local, and tribal health leaders in strengthening policy development and advocacy to benefit their community’s health.”
