Faculty Highlight – John Adams, PhD, MBA, MA, CPA (inactive), Associate Professor, Department of Health Services Research and Administration
Dr. Adams joined the faculty of the College of Public Health in January 2011 after 22 years as a UNMC administrator, most recently as assistant vice chancellor for budget and strategic planning.
Prior to retiring as assistant vice chancellor, Dr. Adams was responsible for strategic planning, long-range financial planning, budgeting, debt financing, and federal financial compliance. He will continue to coordinate UNMC strategic planning and implementation through the remainder of 2011. Prior to joining UNMC, Dr. Adams was vice president of finance for Children’s Square, USA, and associate professor of accounting and management at Luther College.
Dr. Adams taught Strategic Planning and Management and Healthcare Finance during the spring semester and is preparing completely redesigned versions of the courses for the upcoming academic year. Both courses feature a number of guest appearances by practicing professionals who engage students through in-depth examples and case studies. Dr. Adams is chairing his first service-learning/capstone experience committee and is looking forward to advising incoming MPH students. “Dr. Adams has been a great asset to our department and college since he joined our faculty. Our faculty and students benefit tremendously from his great expertise and rich experience in strategic and financial planning,” said Dr. Li-Wu Chen, interim chair of the Department of Health Services and Research Administration.
Dr. Adams has provided strategic planning and related consultation services to a number of organizations and is currently assisting with mission statement development and implementation planning for the Nebraska Joint Data Center, a partnership between the UNMC College of Public Health and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health. Dr. Adams intends to pursue similar community service/consulting opportunities that will complement his research interests in strategic planning and governing board development and evaluation. Dr. Adams is currently president of the Fontenelle Nature Association board of directors.
