Faculty Highlight – Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, PhD, Excellence in Teaching Award Winner

Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, PhD

Dr. Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway is the 2010-2011 recipient of the College’s Excellence in Teaching Award, presented at the College’s spring awards dinner on April 4. Dean Ayman El-Mohandes noted that “Shinobu  has shown excellence in all aspects of her career, and it comes as no surprise that her peers chose to honor her in this distinguished manner. Her motivation, humility, and dedication to quality, as well as her organizational and leadership skills, have rightly been recognized by her grateful students.” Dr. Alice Schumaker, associate dean for academic affairs, added that “Shinobu demonstrates a high degree of competency, character, and work ethic in all she does. She brings honor to the title of “excellent teacher” and is very deserving of this award.”

Dr. Watanabe-Galloway is an associate professor in the College of Public Health Department of Epidemiology. She obtained her BA and MA in psychology from the University of Northern Iowa and her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Iowa. Her research expertise includes health disparities research in the areas of cancer and mental health. She is also the Director of Doctoral Programs for the college and teaches epidemiology courses.
