Dr.\nRiley Machal will be joining the UNMC faculty as an instructor on July 31,\n2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\nMachal graduated from UNMC and will arrive in Omaha shortly after finishing her\nresidency at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She said her time\nat OSUMC prepared her well for a career in psychiatry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cResidency\nat OSUMC is intense with extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of\nmental illness in a variety of healthcare settings, including the emergency\ndepartment, hospitals, and outpatient settings,\u201d Dr. Machal said. \u201cThe\nattendings I worked with encouraged independence and were excellent teachers.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As much\nas Dr. Machal enjoyed her time in Columbus, Ohio, she felt the urge to return\nto Nebraska and UNMC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\nalways knew I would return to Eastern Nebraska upon completion of residency to\nbe close to family,\u201d Dr. Machal said. \u201cHaving gone to medical school at UNMC,\nreturning for my interview felt like coming home. I was very impressed with the\nmany changes being made in the department of psychiatry and was attracted to\nthe opportunities available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\nMachal hopes to work with patients dealing with serious and persistent illness\n(SPMI), which includes major depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and\nborderline personality disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\nwere just a lot of great opportunities for me at UNMC,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m excited\nto be involved in the new residency program, medical student education, and\nexpanding care for the SPMI population.\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\nMachal said psychiatry is a unique field of medicine in which we genuinely care\nfor the whole person. \n\n\u201cDuring my surgical\ninternship, I found I was not fulfilled with the limited patient interactions\nand chose to switch specialties to psychiatry where I was able to get to know\nmy patients and make lasting differences in their lives,\u201d she said. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
