He will also see patients at Home Instead Center for Successful Aging (HICSA) with geriatric psychiatrists Dr. Steven Wengel and Dr. Thomas Magnuson. Dr. Baumgartner said their mentorship led him to study geriatric psychiatry.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_401\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-401\" class=\"wp-image-401 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-1536x1110.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-2048x1480.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-768x555.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-1024x740.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2018\/12\/Baumgartner-2-120x87.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Baumgartner, M.D.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy earliest and most consistent mentors have come from the geriatric psychiatry division,\u201d Dr. Baumgartner said. \u201cI enjoy working with the geriatric patient population as well as their family members and their caretakers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Baumgartner said Dr. Wengel and Dr. Magnuson taught him to take time to get to know the patients and their family members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t be happier that Dr. Baumgartner is joining the department, and especially, the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry,\u201d said Dr. Wengel. \u201cI think his calm, deliberate, and thoughtful approach to patient care will serve him well with our older patients. He is a really conscientious physician and a caring person \u2013 we\u2019re very fortunate to have him aboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Dr. Baumgartner could have been a geriatric psychiatrist anywhere, he decided to stay in Nebraska. Dr. Baumgartner graduated from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 2009 and UNMC in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess you can say my family is rooted here in Nebraska,\u201d Dr. Baumgartner said. \u201cBoth of our families are in Nebraska. Plus, I did my training here. My mentors work here. It would have been tough to pick up and leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Baumgartner will finish his residency next June and start working for UNMC on July 1, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Baumgartner wrestled at UNK on an athletic scholarship. He won two state championships at Kearney High School. While at UNMC, Dr. Baumgartner was awarded the Dr. John E. Gilmore Distinguished Scholarship, the Nellie Powley Hills &amp; John Willard Hills Merit Scholarship, and the Robert L.
