{"id":2445,"date":"2026-11-06T10:39:00","date_gmt":"2026-11-06T16:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/?p=2445"},"modified":"2026-11-06T10:39:01","modified_gmt":"2026-11-06T16:39:01","slug":"dr-madeline-west-passes-away-at-age-64","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/2026\/11\/06\/dr-madeline-west-passes-away-at-age-64\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Madeline West passes away at age 64"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Longtime UNMC Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Madeline West, MD, has passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 64.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2026\/11\/west.jpg\" alt=\"west\" class=\"wp-image-2446\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. West was born in San Diego, California, on April 5, 1962, and graduated from UCLA in 1985, but spent almost 40 years in Omaha. She graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine in 1992. She completed her residency at the UNMC\/Creighton Residency Program and graduated in 1997. She was the Chief Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She joined UNMC as an instructor in 1997 and spent three decades helping child and adolescent patients in need. She retired from the Department of Psychiatry on June 30, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDr. West was a beloved child psychiatrist in our department, an active member of the SPARKS team, a dedicated resident and medical student educator, an advocate for Native American mental health, and a trusted clinician helping youth at Charles Drew Health Center,\u201d said Howard Liu, MD, MBA, Chair of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry. \u201cI know that she touched so many generations of learners, peers, staff, and patients at UNMC, Nebraska Medicine, and beyond. I knew Dr. West for 17 years as a close colleague in child psychiatry, and I know that she truly took the time to make a difference for her patients, her mentees, and her colleagues. We will miss her greatly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with her work at UNMC, Dr. West consulted with patients the Santee Reservation Medical Clinic, Nebraska Medicine Transgender Specialty Clinic, Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI), One World Community Health Center, Winnebago Indian Reservation, Indian Health Services, Lutheran Family Services, and was a member of the Interdisciplinary Association of Minority Health Professionals of the Omaha Metropolitan Area (IAMHOME), Graduates and Professionals Representing Achievement, Diversity and Service (GRADS), as well as numerous academic and psychiatric associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funeral services for Dr. West are pending.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Longtime UNMC Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Madeline West, MD, has passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 64.
