UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine psychiatrists will participate in a panel discussion during Women in Medicine Month to discuss their academic and clinical careers.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dana Raml, MD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The event will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on September 20, 2024, in room 2014 at the Michael F. Sorrell Center. The discussion will provide valuable insights into their experiences, highlighting how they have navigated, persevered, and excelled in academic and clinical medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel will include Riley Machal, MD; Lauren Edwards, MD; and Dana Raml, MD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe panel shows you the different types of faculty members we have here, what they do, the areas they work in, the different types of expertise they bring to the table, and we want people to ask questions and gain some insight on how these women balance work and home life in academic medicine,\u201d said Celeste Akers, Co-Chair of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry SPARKS (Sponsoring Psychiatry Activities for Resilience, Kinship, and Support) Committee.  <\/p>\n\n\n

Dr. Machal, assistant professor, joined the Department of Psychiatry in July 2020 as Co-Director of the Active Support for Psychosis in Recovery (ASPIRE) Clinic \u2013 a multidisciplinary clinic providing wrap-around physical and mental health care to those in the Omaha area living with psychosis. In 2023, she started a first-episode psychosis care clinic called Initial Management of Psychosis through Assertive Collaborative Treatment (IMPACT). She is the Assistant Director for Medical Education with the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN), where she directs the behavioral health policy, education, and research Enhanced Medical Education Track (EMET), which allows medical students to elect to explore policy, advocacy, and education in behavioral health in greater deal than the general medical school curriculum provides.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dr. Edwards, assistant professor, is an outpatient board-certified psychiatrist trained to treat all mental health concerns who specializes in anxiety and stress-related disorders. Her clinical interests include the effective management of anxiety disorders, psychotherapy, and the effects of diet\/nutrition on mental illness and treatment..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Raml, assistant professor and Division Director for the Adult Outpatient Division in Psychiatry, serves as the Phase 3 Director and Associate Clerkship Director for the Department of Psychiatry. She is an active member of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, serving as the Membership and Engagement Committee Co-Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moderators for the discussion are Ada Walker, JD, UNMC Vice-President, People Development & Culture; Sheritta Strong, MD, DFAPA, UNMC Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Engagement; and Sarah Richards, MD, Senior Medical Director of Clinician Experience at Nebraska Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
