On March 18, five first-year residents matched with the UNMC Department of Psychiatry. The new interns bring the number of psychiatry residents to 15.

George Blankenau, MD; Jacob Givens, MD; and Harrison Greene, MD, matched after graduating from the UNMC College of Medicine. Casey Reihe, MD, will join the department after graduating from the University of South Dakota. Mukanya Tchombela, DO, comes to Omaha after graduating from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to welcome Drs. Blankenau, Givens, Greene, Reihe, and Tchombela to the UNMC Department of Psychiatry Residency Program,\u201d said Daniel Gih, MD, Director of Education for the UNMC Department of Psychiatry. \u201cMore than five hundred individuals applied to the psychiatry residency program each year over the last three match cycles. Only about 10 percent of applicants are interviewed. The residency appreciated the many efforts of faculty and staff in the department who reviewed, interviewed, and helped rank the applicants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the new interns arrive in July, the total number of residents will grow to 15. Prior to the March 2020 Match Day, there were zero psychiatry residents as the department waited for their first four matches to arrive. The new residents will join current residents Thomas Bainter, MD; Michaelyn Everhart, MD; Logan Ford, MD; Bryndis Grissom, DO; Matthew Kelly, MD; Nina Luo, DO; Max Lydiatt, MD, Andi Ngo, MD, and Emily Royer, MD. Second-year resident Zachary Rupp, MD, joined the department as a transfer resident beginning in July 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNMC did not hold a Match Day ceremony in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremony returned on March 18, and Drs. Blankenau, Givens, and Greene were able to announce they were staying home to a crowd assembled at Baxter Arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
