{"id":1356,"date":"2022-03-02T09:37:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T15:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/?p=1356"},"modified":"2022-03-02T15:11:19","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T21:11:19","slug":"spotlight-douglas-coffey-msn-bsn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/2022\/03\/02\/spotlight-douglas-coffey-msn-bsn\/","title":{"rendered":"SPOTLIGHT: Douglas Coffey, RN, MSN"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Douglas has worked in many different nursing roles during the past four decades, including as a Staff RN, Charge RN, Unit Director, Director of Support Services, Director of Access and Outpatient Services, Director of Patient Services, CNO and CEO of Behavioral Health Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2022\/03\/Coffey-Douglas-2016-1-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2022\/03\/Coffey-Douglas-2016-1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2022\/03\/Coffey-Douglas-2016-1.jpg 614w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Douglas has served as a Combat Medic, NCO, OIC, a variety of unit leadership positions through the Commander of a US Army Hospital in a career spanning nearly 34 years of military service in the USAR, and has provided care in a Field Hospital (think MASH), including surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What made you decide to be a nurse?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I graduated from Wayne State College with a degree in Education, but there were no teaching jobs available.&nbsp; After a year of being unemployed or underemployed, I began exploring other careers.&nbsp; I decided on nursing and joined the US Army Reserves to pay for my nursing education.&nbsp; It was a great career choice for both.&nbsp; I have never regretted the career change or joining the Reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why did you go into psychiatry?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had studied a lot of psychology and human behavior at Wayne State, and it always interested me.&nbsp; Going into psych nursing was pretty natural for me from day one.&nbsp; I find myself always watching people and trying to understand behavior.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How has the PES helped the community during its first year of existence?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have only been here about seven months, but it is clear that patients benefit from a specialized team that can more closely evaluate their needs and establish a plan.&nbsp;Without this program, patients may not receive the most appropriate disposition to meet their needs.&nbsp; It also contributes to improved care in the Emergency Department overall, utilizing resources more targeted to patient needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What are some of your hobbies?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enjoying semi-retirement by spending time with family and friends, reading, golfing, traveling and whatever else I decide to do!!!<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/voicedwhispering.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\" IY MeJkRev\"> IY MeJkRev<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Douglas has worked in many different nursing roles during the past four decades, including as a Staff RN, Charge RN, Unit Director, Director of Support Services, Director of Access and Outpatient Services, Director of Patient Services, CNO and CEO of Behavioral Health Services.
