These films shed light on \u201cmid-century psychiatry, medical education, and the use of film and media in healthcare training,\u201d Digital Archivist Larissa Krayer wrote in a description.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digitizing these films offers&nbsp;great potential&nbsp;value to researchers&nbsp;seeking&nbsp;to gauge how the healthcare&nbsp;field&nbsp;once understood and treated mental health.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An archivist\u2019s approach<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McGoogan archivists digitize everything from works on paper to works created with increasingly obsolete technologies such as&nbsp;16mm&nbsp;film.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digitized artifacts can then be used in research and teaching, displayed in online exhibits or on touch screens around campus.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond materials like those covered by the CLIR grant, archivists often handle videos of groundbreakings and other moments now considered historically relevant to the UNMC community.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it\u2019s on a screen, I\u2019ve probably touched it,\u201d Krayer said.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To complete this work, archivists familiarize themselves with&nbsp;technology old and new, Krayer said\u2014and where it can be found. This might mean \u201cscrounging\u201d&nbsp;EBay, visiting the electronics section at a thrift store&nbsp;or&nbsp;absorbing knowledge from campus IT, she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Medical history on film<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the films Krayer and her colleagues processed&nbsp;with the CLIR grant&nbsp;were decades-old films on&nbsp;electroconvulsive&nbsp;shock therapy&nbsp;which both included violent physical images and, at times, a clear intent on making the process safer and less traumatic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also&nbsp;present:&nbsp;public-service videos on mental health that featured animation reminiscent of \u201cSchoolhouse Rock,\u201d Krayer said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McGoogan staff practiced trauma-informed librarianship along the way, dividing labor and taking necessary breaks from these often very moving images, Krayer added.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Archivists must keep a&nbsp;close&nbsp;eye on&nbsp;each audiovisual material they receive,&nbsp;she&nbsp;said,&nbsp;since they&nbsp;can&#8217;t&nbsp;know what&nbsp;might be useful or historically relevant&nbsp;otherwise. They&nbsp;also&nbsp;go into the process knowing they&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;be able to keep or use every object due to patient and privacy considerations.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relevant footage archivists&nbsp;discover,&nbsp;\u201cthe pieces we find that are worth it are going to be&nbsp;<em>very&nbsp;<\/em>worth it,\u201d Krayer said.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What a CLIR grant does<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CLIR\u2019s Recording at Risk grants are designed to preserve \u201ctime-based media of public value through digital reformatting,\u201d according to its website.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This might include \u201cmagnetic audio and video tape, grooved discs, wax cylinders, wire recordings, and film (with or without sound),\u201d the site adds.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In McGoogan\u2019s case, archivists&nbsp;contributed context to historical understandings of mental health care, delivering a means to \u201cunparalleled insights into past treatment methodologies, patient experiences, and societal perceptions of mental illness,\u201d according to a description of the project on the CLIR website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volume and access were key principles driving the project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSnippets of some of these films have been made available by other institutions; however, by digitizing these reels, we can unlock their entire educational and historical significance, ensuring their preservation, wider dissemination, and research use,\u201d the CLIR website notes in describing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrants.clir.org%2Ffunded-projects%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cadanielsen%40unmc.edu%7C939027da156f435c13d308df037ed722%7C84a28940b46441c3ba3bb4fa6665bc05%7C0%7C0%7C639233515463818531%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=chv3S8vIsqRj5neQHmpxake4Lst66c7%2FEf0mOCAW6Z8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"its connection with UNMC and McGoogan, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noopener\">its connection with UNMC and McGoogan<\/a>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those films which&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;be made publicly accessible, Krayer and McGoogan archivists also used the grant to create and attach metadata&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;thorough enough to help researchers&nbsp;gauge their&nbsp;level of&nbsp;interest.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Think of the library before you throw away<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;naturally&nbsp;equal&nbsp;better, with Krayer noting some physical media will last longer than some of its digital counterparts. But this work underlines and addresses the importance of access.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A \u201ccliff\u201d exists for some formats, at which point digital migration will become prohibitive or even impossible, Krayer said. McGoogan archivists continue looking for entry&nbsp;points,&nbsp;so important materials can be accessed no matter what time and technology have to say.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Krayer, what is considered old often teaches new lessons\u2014or at least reinforces timeless ones. Working on the CLIR grant project, Krayer was reminded that teaching tools and medical interventions change constantly, but education and evolution remain core to the work.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To archive is to learn constantly, Krayer said. She especially enjoys experimenting with and creating new workflows, protecting media&nbsp;materials,&nbsp;then&nbsp;handing them off to current and future archivists.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this in mind, Krayer and her colleagues ask those in the UNMC community to think of McGoogan before they throw out any physical media.&nbsp;They are looking for tools and formats that their keepers have plugged in or know&nbsp;work&nbsp;to some degree.
