The Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Center for Library Programs has secured an Open Publishing Agreement with Wiley that provides open publishing opportunities for affiliated corresponding authors through December 31, 2027, while maintaining full read access to Wiley\u2019s journal portfolio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For University of Nebraska authors, this new agreement provides the ability to publish open access (OA) in Wiley\u2019s hybrid OA journals (\u201cOnline Open\u201d)<\/a> without individual article fees for articles editorially accepted in 2026 and 2027. In addition, there is a limited allocation for publishing in Wiley\u2019s gold OA journals (\u201cFully Open Access\u201d)<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continued Hybrid OA Benefits <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you are a corresponding author at UNMC, you will continue to benefit from unlimited open access publishing for articles accepted in 2026 and 2027 in Wiley\u2019s hybrid OA journals<\/a> at no cost and full read access to the Wiley journal portfolio. The agreement maintains the Alliance\u2019s \u201cno fees, no caps, no limits\u201d approach for Wiley\u2019s hybrid OA journal<\/a> articles editorially accepted in 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Gold OA Changes <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With this new agreement, there is a limited allocation for publishing in Wiley\u2019s gold OA journals<\/a>. Articles submitted to Wiley\u2019s gold OA journals<\/a> by Monday, August 31, 2026 are guaranteed to be covered under the central contract with the Big Ten Academic Alliance; after this date, authors will begin to see Article Processing Charges (APC fees) that need to be paid from other sources, which could include granting agencies or the author. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Means for Authors <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Authors should\u00a0plan ahead\u00a0when considering publishing in Wiley journals. For\u00a0Wiley\u2019s hybrid OA journals,<\/a>\u00a0you should carefully consider the average time to publication to try to ensure your article is accepted and the author agreement completed by the December 31,\u00a02027\u00a0deadline.\u00a0Wiley\u2019s gold OA journals<\/a>\u00a0articles\u00a0will need to be\u00a0submitted\u00a0for publication by Monday, August 31,\u00a02026\u00a0to\u00a0be covered by this agreement. After\u00a0that\u00a0date\u00a0authors will need to seek funding support from other sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Is This Change Needed? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The BTAA states \u201cThe extension of the Wiley agreement ensures continuity for authors and institutions across the Big Ten Academic Alliance, maintaining publishing eligibility and access, and provides clarity as affiliated authors plan for future publications. At the same time, this change reflects broader challenges and pressures in research publishing. Against this backdrop, the Alliance remains committed to supporting open access as a model that recognizes both the real costs of publishing and the importance of making scholarly work widely and fairly available as a public good.\u201d
