{"id":5408,"date":"2025-04-29T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/library\/?p=5408"},"modified":"2025-04-29T11:29:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T16:29:42","slug":"empowering-future-health-professionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/library\/2025\/04\/29\/empowering-future-health-professionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Empowering Future Health Professionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Since 2022, McGoogan Library faculty have coordinated the instruction in the High School Alliance course \u201cThe Art and Science of Decision-Making.\u201d Utilizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/library\/special-collections\/index.html\">special collections<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/library\/special-collections\/books.html\">rare books<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/library\/special-collections\/art-artifacts.html\">artifacts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/library\/special-collections\/art-artifacts.html\">art<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/unmc.libguides.com\/Graphic_Medicine\">graphic medicine collection<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibits.unmc.edu\/whc\/welcome\">Wigton Heritage Center exhibitions<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/unmc.access.preservica.com\/uncategorized\/SO_f385ff4a-bcba-49f9-a592-6bba6da35f6d\/\">oral histories<\/a>, McGoogan faculty have introduced High School Alliance students to the health humanities.\u00a0The health humanities teach empathy, listening and observation skills, acceptance of ambiguity, and growth in professional identity formation, all important components for healthy and effective health science professionals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By studying the history of the health sciences through artifacts and rare books students gain perspective on the changes in the field that contribute to professional identity formation. Library faculty use their expertise in graphic medicine and oral histories to promote a growth in empathy. Student interaction with art, artifacts, and exhibitions facilitates their observational skills.
