Preprints are frequently posted in an electronic format and often made available to the public on a preprint server such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bioRxiv<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medRxiv<\/a>. Most preprints are assigned a digital object identifier (DOI) so that it is possible to cite them in other research papers. Preprints are often associated with a push towards Open Access (OA) as well as efforts to expedite the dissemination of scientific content.&nbsp; While preprints have been around for several decades, the COVID-19 global pandemic has led to a dramatic increase in the number of publications archived in preprint servers. A 2020 Nature article entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-01520-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Will the pandemic permanently alter scientific publishing<\/a>&#8221; explores the potential impacts of preprints on the scholarly publications&#8217; life cycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros of archiving preprints include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>fast dissemination\/discussion of research results\u00a0<\/li><li>feedback from the research community prior to submission to a scientific journal\u00a0<\/li><li>earlier documentation of the originality of research based on DOI\u00a0<\/li><li>exposure of research to a potentially larger group\u00a0<\/li><li>availability of articles that might otherwise not be published\u00a0<\/li><li>availability to researchers without library access\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cons of archiving preprints include:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>dissemination of inaccurate information&nbsp;<\/li><li>misuse of preprints by media and news outlets&nbsp;<\/li><li>contribution to &#8220;information overload&#8221;&nbsp;<\/li><li>refusal of some publishers to publish items that have been archived as preprints&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on preprints, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/unmc.libguides.com\/authortoolkit\/preprints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research guide<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article was reproduced from the <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.himmelfarb.gwu.edu\/preprints\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library<\/a>, licensed under a <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The McGoogan Library is posting a series of articles regarding new methods of scholarly dissemination. &nbsp; A preprint is a version of a research manuscript that is disseminated prior to the peer review process.
