NLM Spotlight: Nursing Resource Page on Standard Terminologies

In March 2015, the American Nursing Association released a position statement supporting the use of recognized standard terminologies in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems to code nursing problems, interventions, observations, assessments, and outcomes. In response to this statement, the National Library of Medicine released a new resource webpage: Nursing Resources for Standards and Interoperability.

This resource page:

  • Explains the role of SNOMED CT and LOINC terminologies in implementing Meaningful Use in EHRs
  • Highlights other highly used nursing terminologies
  • Provides a video tutorial demonstrating how to search nursing terms in the Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus Browser
  • Links to additional resources for nursing clinical documentation

The page is useful for nurses, nursing students, nursing informaticists, and anyone interested in exploring nursing technologies.
