{"id":848,"date":"2018-01-31T08:00:26","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T14:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/?p=848"},"modified":"2018-01-31T10:38:31","modified_gmt":"2018-01-31T16:38:31","slug":"can-social-media-revolutionize-academic-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/2018\/01\/31\/can-social-media-revolutionize-academic-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Social Media Revolutionize Academic Medicine?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>As we approach our first anniversary in the blogosphere, it was fitting that our very own <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/2017\/03\/28\/dr-cawcutt-on-why-i-love-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Kelly Cawcutt<\/a>\u00a0was invited to write a commentary on\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/infection-control-and-hospital-epidemiology\/article\/what-makes-a-tweet-fly-analysis-of-twitter-messaging-at-four-infection-control-conferences\/6271FF1364299491465BED91FB30BF56\/core-reader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent publication in the journal Infection Control &amp; Hospital Epidemiology<\/a>\u00a0that explored the use of Twitter messaging at four major Infectious Diseases\/Infection Control conferences worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Cawcutt&#8217;s commentary, entitled<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/ice.2017.242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter Me This\u2014Can Social Media Revolutionize Academic Medicine?<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was published in December 2017 in<em> Infection Control &amp; Hospital Epidemiology<\/em>.\u00a0 \u00a0The articles reviewed the influence of Twitter on increasing public engagement in academic conferences, particularly in spreading the reach and impact of the conferences beyond just the attendees.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNMC_ID\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@unmc_id<\/a> twitter account went live last fall at #IDweek2017, and we&#8217;ve been having a ball tweeting and retweeting. We were very active in the #USAAW2017 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/antibiotic-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#beantibioticsaware campaign<\/a>, and plan to continue ramping up our online presence.<\/p>\n<p>Gone are the days where acquisition of medical knowledge was limited to hard copy journals, and if you missed a conference you missed the action altogether.\u00a0 Today, in the era of online access journals, Twitter, Facebook and podcasts, <em>we can be at every conference, anywhere in the world<\/em>;\u00a0 stay updated on current hot topics, and use hashtags to connect with others who have similar interests.<\/p>\n<p>So can Social Media revolutionize Academic Medicine?<\/p>\n<p><strong>YES.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to join the revolution of #unmcid.
