{"id":824,"date":"2018-01-05T08:00:22","date_gmt":"2018-01-05T14:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/?p=824"},"modified":"2017-12-01T08:57:30","modified_gmt":"2017-12-01T14:57:30","slug":"effect-of-variations-in-clinical-practice-on-blood-culture-volumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/2018\/01\/05\/effect-of-variations-in-clinical-practice-on-blood-culture-volumes\/","title":{"rendered":"Effect of variations in clinical practice on blood culture volumes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Blood cultures obtained from central venous catheters (CVC) contain a significantly greater volume of blood than those obtained via peripheral venipuncture.\u00a0 This is the main finding from a study recently published by investigators at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) (Jones RL, Syles HR, Fey PD and Rupp ME).\u00a0 \u201cEffect of Clinical Variables on the Volume of Blood Collected for Blood Cultures in an Adult Patient Population\u201d, <em>Infection Control Hospital Epidemiology, 2017,<\/em> available at: <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1017\/ice.2017.230\"><strong>http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1017\/ice.2017.230.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study involved measuring the volume of blood collected on a representative population, extracting clinical data from the electronic medical record, and then performing linear model analysis to determine clinical variables that influenced volume recovery.\u00a0 Although the conclusion that CVC drawn blood cultures contain a greater volume may seem insignificant, it has profound implications for patient care.\u00a0 The sensitivity of blood cultures is highly volume dependent with a decreased yield of approximately 3-4% for each milliliter the blood culture is \u201cshorted\u201d.\u00a0 It was observed that<em> CVC drawn blood cultures contained on average 2.5mL more blood than peripheral drawn cultures<\/em>, which would equate to an 8.4% decrease in sensitivity &#8211;
