{"id":567,"date":"2017-11-15T08:05:14","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T14:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/?p=567"},"modified":"2018-12-28T11:03:36","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T17:03:36","slug":"be-antibiotics-aware-in-long-term-care-facilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/2017\/11\/15\/be-antibiotics-aware-in-long-term-care-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Be Antibiotics Aware&#8230;in Long-Term Care Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><strong>Nebraska ASAP efforts promote antimicrobial stewardship activities in long-term care facilities across the state<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up to 70% of residents in long-term care facilities receive at least one course of systemic antibiotic annually, with 40-75% of prescribed antibiotics being considered unnecessary or inappropriate.\u00a0 As part of the condition for participation, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will require all long-term care facilities to have an antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) by November 28, 2017. \u00a0However, most nursing home lack both the experience and the expertise required to develop a comprehensive ASP.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asap.nebraskamed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nebraska Antimicrobial Stewardship Assessment and Promotion Program (ASAP)<\/a>, which represents a partnership between University of Nebraska Medical Center\/ Nebraska Medicine and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, is focused on helping LTCF across Nebraska in development of their own ASP. The Nebraska ASAP has already partnered with 5 LTCFs to provide assessments, implementation strategies and shared resources to start and sustain their own ASP.
