To date, 57 of these cases are within US borders, and there\nare increasing cases throughout the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNMC &amp; Nebraska Medicine have had our quarantine and\nbiocontainment units active and caring for patients with known COVID-19 (also\nknown as SARS-CoV-2) infection. Our multidisciplinary teams are working hard to\nprevent spread of infection, to care for those with infection and now, we are\nlaunching into research for future treatments. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first study in the US, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/02\/26\/nih-begins-clinical-trial-of-drug-to-treat-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NIH sponsored randomized, controlled trial of the antiviral medication (remdesivir)<\/a> has begun. Dr. Andr\u00e9 Kalil is the Primary Investigator, with several co-investigators from our team caring for patients with COVID-19.
