{"id":2121,"date":"2018-10-12T10:18:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T15:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/?p=2121"},"modified":"2018-10-12T10:17:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T15:17:34","slug":"update-for-hiv-care-providers-and-educators-revived-and-reinvigorated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/2018\/10\/12\/update-for-hiv-care-providers-and-educators-revived-and-reinvigorated\/","title":{"rendered":"Update for HIV Care Providers and Educators Revived and Reinvigorated!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><em>Content written by Nikki Regan, APRN<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After a several year hiatus, the UNMC HIV Update conference was back and better than ever.\u00a0 The conference planning committee at the UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine Specialty Care Clinic started organizing this event over a year ago.\u00a0 \u201cThe interest was definitely there,\u201d said Ann Fitzgerald, APRN at the clinic and AIDS Education and Training Program Director for Nebraska. \u201c<em>In the past we have had about 80 attendees. This year\u2019s conference brought in over 100 participants, and according to our live polling, 40% of them were first-time attendees<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2125\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2018\/10\/hivupdate2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2018\/10\/hivupdate2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2018\/10\/hivupdate2-120x90.jpg 120w, https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/infectious-disease\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2018\/10\/hivupdate2.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The attendees were from diverse backgrounds, including social workers, nurses, advance practice providers, physicians, pharmacists, dentists and public health workers, with some people travelling over 50-100 miles to attend.<\/p>\n<p>The HIV Update conference was jam-packed with hot topics, focused on a multidisciplinary approach to care.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dr. Sara Bares<\/strong> kicked the morning off with a review of new and upcoming approaches for the management of HIV. She shared information about the updated treatment guidelines, as well as new FDA approvals and other treatment options coming down the pipeline, such as long-acting injectable ARV therapy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Mark Malliard<\/strong> shared the joy and new-found simplicity of treating Hepatitis C&#8211;\u201cYou will cure their Hepatitis C, and your patients will love you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Jasmine Marcelin<\/strong> gave a moving presentation on the history and persistence of disparities in healthcare for people living with HIV, especially people of color. She urged the audience to move the focus from equality to equity, and ultimately\u2014social justice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Josh Havens, PharmD<\/strong>, discussed Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV negative patients and encouraged providers who aren\u2019t yet providing PrEP to consider doing so. Unfortunately, there are few providers in the area who are prescribing PrEP at this time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Jean Amoura<\/strong> deciphered terminology and care considerations related to transgender care.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Susan Swindells, Kim Scarsi, PharmD, and Precious Davis, MSN<\/strong>, opened up discussion of several case-based scenarios to demonstrate how the inter-professional team can work together to meet the needs of complex patients.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Mario Sanchez and Dr. Alex Dworak<\/strong>, from One World Community Health Center, teamed up to highlight the importance of addressing mental health and substance abuse disorders. Their advice for uncovering these comorbidities: \u201cAsk. Then be prepared for the answer.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daniel Cobos, RN, MPH and Nikki Regan, APRN<\/strong>, wrapped up the day with an entertaining debate regarding condoms. Cobos argued that in the era of U=U and PrEP, condoms are outdated.
