Our Faculty at University of Nebraska Medical Center Division of Infectious Diseases have worked hard to maintain a strong academic presence at UNMC. We are a growing division, filled with faculty at all stages of their careers, and their collective academic prowess has our division leading the pack. Our recent Department of Medicine Research report for 2017 pegged UNMCID as the #1 Division for the number and amount of extramural contracts\/awards and #2 for number of publications<\/strong> (out of 10 Divisions in Internal Medicine).\u00a0We recently had several posters and oral presentations presented at\u00a0#CROI2018<\/a>,\u00a0#SHEA2018<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0#ECCMID2018<\/a>. We are proud of our faculty and would like to share some of their accomplishments with our followers.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr. Alison Freifeld<\/strong> has been invited to speak at #IDWeek2018 on new developments in the management of cancer patients, and she is on the steering committee for the American Council on Education (ACE) program at UNMC: goal is to internationalize our campus\/curriculum\/student body.\u00a0 This program is mandated by the Chancellor and reflects UNMC\u2019s commitment to expanding our efforts in international engagement and global health education and research.<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr. Jasmine Marcelin<\/strong> was recently co-recipient of the award for Outstanding multi-site Quality Improvement Project for 2017 \u2013 Mayo Clinic Quality Review Board {Project: Management of Febrile Neutropenia (MOFN), completed as a fellow with Drs. Jack O’Horo and Omar Abu Saleh}. Dr. Marcelin also co-authored recently published papers about\u00a0\u00a0Mycobacterium genavense infections in non-HIV immunocompromised hosts<\/a>\u00a0(Infectious Diseases<\/em><\/strong>) and\u00a0Efficacy of Antitoxin Therapy in Treating Patients With Foodborne Botulism: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Cases, 1923\u20132016<\/a>\u00a0(Clinical Infectious Diseases<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n

\"\"Dr. Susan Swindells<\/strong>\u00a0was recently highlighted in ground-breaking research likely to change the paradigm of latent TB treatment in persons living with HIV; presented at #CROI2018<\/strong>:\u00a0One Month of Rifapentine\/Isoniazid to Prevent TB in People with HIV.<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0Dr. Swindells also collaborated with UNMC colleagues (including Jennifer O’Neill, RN of the Specialty Care Clinic) on a recent paper published in\u00a0Brain<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0Aberrant occipital dynamics differentiate HIV-infected patients with and without cognitive impairment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Renee Furl<\/strong>, one of our Specialty Care Center Social Workers, recently collaborated with Dr. Susan Swindells on a paper published in BMC Infectious Diseases<\/em><\/strong> entitled:\u00a0Determinants of facilitated health insurance enrollment for patients with HIV disease, and impact of insurance enrollment on targeted health outcomes<\/a>. Renee and Dr. Swindells also collaborated to co-mentor UNMC EMET medical student\u00a0 Bianca Christensen (M3), who recently won the\u00a0Internal Medicine Department Student Research Award.<\/div>\n

\"\"Dr. Sara Bares<\/strong>‘ academic interests include medical education and research about persons living with HIV.\u00a0 Dr. Bares’ recent publications include a paper in the Journal of Women’s Health<\/strong><\/em> demonstrating that\u00a0<\/span>among Persons Living With HIV, Women PLWH Gain More Weight than Male PLWH Following the Initiation of Antiretroviral Therapy<\/a>. Dr. Bares also collaborated with colleagues in the UNMC Specialty Care Clinic (Dr. Susan Swindells, Josh Havens PharmD, and Ann Fitzgerald APRN) on\u00a0Implementation of an HIV clinic-based interprofessional education curriculum for nursing, medical and pharmacy students<\/a>, published recently in the Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice<\/em><\/strong>. Dr. Bares also mentors UNMC EMET medical student Travis\u00a0Schreier (M3), who recently was inducted into the\u00a0Gold Humanism Honor Society<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. M. Salman Ashraf<\/strong> has been especially busy. His area of expertise is Antimicrobial Stewardship, especially in Long-term Care Facilities. Dr. Diana Florescu will be promoted to the rank of Professor effective July 1, 2018<\/strong>. Recently Dr. Florescu, along with UNMC Transplant ID colleagues Drs. \"\"Dr. James Lawler<\/strong>\u00a0 (former White House Homeland Security Council biodefense policy director) was recently called upon to share his expertise pertaining to Biosecurity at the\u00a0Blue Ribbon Study Panel on Biodefense<\/a>, where he cautioned that we are unprepared for biological threats that may affect our country and the world.\u00a0 He called for a new paradigm of innovation to prepare ourselves for future threats.
