Variety of department involvement for M3 send-off

The 2016-2017 academic year for the Department of Family Medicine begins with organizing six, eight-week rural rotations for third-year medical students. A family medicine preceptorship experience is required for all students. There is no comparable way for the student to observe the physician in his/her medical, ethical, and community relationships.

Eighteen UNMC students are visiting fifteen different rural communities across the state to train with volunteer preceptors during the first rotation.

Orientation for the group included workshops in splinting and aspiration with Medical Student Education Director Dr. Mindy Lacey, and a review of the course objections and expectations.

Students heard from Liliana Bronner and Nikki Carritt and learned about the Nebraska AHEC program. They also participated in a Mental Matinee with Behavioral Health Director, Dr. Jessica Koran, a discussion that uses television and film to explore the presentation of behavioral health topic.

The rural rotation will conclude on August 28.
