Family Medicine hosts UNL students in Sim Lab

Members of the Alpha Epsilon Delta University of Nebraska-Lincoln chapter got a glimpse into the life of a medical student on Wednesday, February 24 when Family Medicine faculty members hosted the group in the Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab.

Family Medicine Professor and Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills, Dr. Paul Paulman, along with Family Medicine Associate Professor and Medical Student Education Director, Dr. Mindy Lacey, hosted the pre-health honors society as they practiced sutures and arm splits.

UNL student Victoria Shum was grateful for the evening while it gave her a glimpse of what medical school is like at UNMC.

“This experience gets me excited for my future as a health professional, gaining more hands on experience and seeing what my education could be like in the future. The facility is also a great environment for simulation teaching and that is something I would look forward to at UNMC,” Shum said.

UNMC College of Medicine students Laura Pinon, Marie Rodehorst, and Dylan Smith were also on hand to answer questions about life at UNMC and assist the Alpha Epsilon Delta members with the demonstrations.

The evening concluded with a tour of the Sorrell Clinical Simulation Lab, showing the visitors the education opportunities available to UNMC students.

“I really enjoyed seeing the mock exam rooms and how UNMC uses them to give their students hands on experience. It is unique to practice conducting a patient examination and then getting feedback from your professors to help you learn more,” UNL student Hannah Schulacher said.
