Williams Science Hall Update 1/31/20

WSH activities from this week and looking forward:

Phase 1 update:

Construction: Not much change. Things are progressing.

  • Noise levels are constant and vary day-to-day
  • Smells: there is a welding crew working on the steel frame of the feature wall (see below) which has a distinct smell you will notice over the next couple of weeks.
  • All floors:
    • Demolition in atrium is ongoing
      • All storefront (glass walls) have been removed
    • Metal stud framing, walls and ceiling soffits, and drywall is being hung
    • Steel for feature wall in atrium is being installed (see images below)
    • Ductwork installation (supply/exhaust) has extended in to the atrium space to connect to the main vertical shaft by the existing restrooms
    • Electrical and plumbing rough-ins – copper water line installation is ongoing
    • Fire sprinkler system design is almost finalized

Safety:

  • Only authorized personnel in the construction areas and only with PPE
  • Please continue to report any issues (e.g. unexplained odors) as they arise
  • 2 CRAs were held yesterday re: fire sprinkler plugs in atrium space. The work started today and will be complete today. The only change is firewatch has extended to include elevator lobbies in front of the construction temp walls. The East portion of the building is not impacted. The other CRA involves installing one copper water line on the 1st floor outside of the construction barrier. Exact path and start date TBD.

Other issues/items:

  • New building exhaust unit expected to arrive onsite by mid-March – a crane will be onsite to lift the units to the roof top.

**NOTE: We are looking at a building HVAC transition to the new unit April 13-17**

  • What does this mean? The existing building exhaust will have to be shut down for a period of time in order to connect to the new.
  • The current date is an estimate for when and how long.
  • I will schedule additional meetings with occupants as this will affect hood usage and general building occupancy for this window only.

Schedule & Budget:

  • Phase 1 anticipated completion June 2020
    • Lead time on glass railings may have impact
    • Exhaust fan and AHUs – March 9-13, approximate
      • Exhaust transition to new unit April 13-17, approximate
    • Phase 2 & Substantial Completion is August 2020
    • Final completion: Fall 2020
    • Budget items:
      • Firewatch – currently absorbing in contingency
      • Fume hood infrastructure for teaching and 4th floor vacant labs in SW corner
