{"id":7027,"date":"2024-09-30T10:20:03","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T15:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/?p=7027"},"modified":"2024-09-30T10:20:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T15:20:05","slug":"schiefelbein-brings-the-lab-to-next-gen-professionals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/2024\/09\/30\/schiefelbein-brings-the-lab-to-next-gen-professionals\/","title":{"rendered":"Schiefelbein brings the lab to next gen professionals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>How do we make a laboratory safe, accessible, and fun to young students who want to learn about the medical laboratory science profession?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MLS Education Coordinator Lauren Schiefelbein has some &#8220;out of the box&#8221; methods, including designing props, games, and various laboratory analogies that can be physically taken into high school and college classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLaboratory recruitment suffers by being almost entirely biohazardous in nature \u2013 most high schools don&#8217;t want you to bring live, infectious bacteria inside,\u201d says Lauren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, she was one of three presenters featured in the online event ASCP: Path to Chicago session titled, &#8220;Non-Traditional Recruitment Methods for the Next Generation of Laboratory Professionals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Saturday, the MLS program held Shadow Saturday on the UNMC Omaha campus. It\u2019s an in-person event where participants experience an in-depth, hands-on look at the MLS profession and explore how diagnostic testing influences health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of some current MLS students and faculty, Lauren walked some high school and college students through a case study that touched on different areas of the lab, such as hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and urinalysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants were engaged in solving a mysterious illness.
