{"id":1434,"date":"2011-04-11T09:03:36","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T15:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/?p=1434"},"modified":"2011-04-11T09:03:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T15:03:36","slug":"volunteer-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.unmc.edu\/alliedhealth\/2011\/04\/11\/volunteer-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer Opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">The UNMC Student Senate, including the COPH Student Senators have been planning a community health screening fair to be held at the <span style=\"color: #cc0000\">Juan Diego Center<\/span> in south Omaha on <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>April 16, 2011 from 11 am to 3 pm<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">.<\/span>\u00a0They are looking for community-oriented volunteers for two shifts from 11-1 and 1-3. The event is being planned in collaboration with students from the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Graduate Studies, Nutrition, Allied Health, and Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (sorry if I forgot anyone).\u00a0Their goal is to provide health related education and screening to underserved populations in Omaha. However, the event is open to anyone.\u00a0They are planning activities for both adults and children. All booths\/stations will provide info in both English and Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Events currently being planned are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Blood glucose screening\/diabetes education<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Foot sensation screening<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">HIV\/STD education<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Pediatric blood lead testing <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Potential drug interaction screening\/ask a pharmacist<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">BMI measurements\/healthy weight education<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Hypertension screening with CVD education<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Smoking cessation\/prevention education<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00b7 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">Exercise for healthy living activities (i.e. Dancing for exercise, sports safety, Wii exercise)<\/span><\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">They\u00a0need volunteers to help provide education and screening. Public Health students will assist guests through the event and the screening opportunities and work at stations alongside students from other schools. Public Health&#8217;s booth, specifically, is the Bload Lead Poisoning station.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: sans-serif;font-size: x-small\">\u00a0They could also really use some help with Spanish translation\/interpretation.
