Structure of the EMPOWER Session

EMPOWER conducts sessions two Fridays out of the month. They consist of: an education session facilitated by the students with a presentation and discussion. In addition, basic health screenings and medical referrals to SHARING (student-run clinic) for continuity of care are conducted per workshop schedule.

Education Workshop

Each EMPOWER session consists of an education workshop. These presentations last 15 minutes and cover one of the following topics:

Immunizations

Exercise for Prevention and Wellness

Healthy Eating on a Budget

OTC Medications

Battle of the Bugs

Child Safety

Depression

Common Medical Conditions

Presentation is followed by a discussion and question and answer session. Topics rotate throughout the year. Please see Workshop Schedule.

Basic Health Screening

At set dates basic health screenings are offered with faculty supervision.  The following are assessed:

  • Blood pressure
  • Body mass index
  • Risk assessment screening
  • Healthy behaviors
  • Mental Health
  • Medications
  • Nutrition
  • Family history
  • Past medical history

In addition, in the fall EMPOWER offers a free flu-shot clinic.
