The Service Learning Academy (SLA) expands community-campus partnerships through the integration of SL educational experiences in local, regional, national, and international community-based organizations.
Hosted by the UNMC College of Public Health, the goal of the SLA is to provide students in Public Health and other Health Professions with the opportunity to experience the unique Service Learning pedagogy and prepare competent and community-responsive health professionals. The SLA offers unique interdisciplinary and interprofessional service-learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate level students enrolled at the University of Nebraska Medical Center campuses.
While practice environments are comprised of interprofessional teams, most education of health professionals occurs in silos. Interprofessional education seeks to change the learning culture by bringing together students from various professions to learn with, from, and about each other, and build foundations for a safe and collaborative healthcare practice. Interprofessional experiences are promoted by our SLA.
Activities facilitated by the SLA provide community-based experiences for health profession students, address community-identified priorities, advance community health, and foster civic engagement among students, staff, and faculty. Service Learning activities may facilitate collaborative research and scholarship and new health related initiatives.

The Empower Project (WCA)
The Empower Program provides education and basic health screenings to empower women who are victims of domestic violence through knowledge of their personal health. This student run project is developing into provision of women focused clinical care.
This program works with resettled refugees in Douglas County/Omaha metro area to link them with health care providers and preventive health services. Refugees continue to be resettled in Omaha every year, and they face many health care needs as they make the transition from their home countries to the United States. Students engaged in this project will have a unique opportunity to mentor and link refugees with the health care services that they need.
The DCDC’s mission is to contribute to public safety by safely and effectively controlling inmates, managing offenders in the community, and offering programs which prepare inmates to successfully re-enter society. In this Service Learning project students interact with inmates to deliver STD education, testing, and treatment. Students are exposed to the magnitude of the STD problem in the Omaha Metro and develop strategies for intervention.
Finding a Voice
This project links healthcare students with individuals who are homeless and/or addicts receiving services at the SFH. It includes workshops that provide guests at the shelter an opportunity to express themselves through writing and art. More information can be found at http://www.findingavoiceproject.org/.
Decreasing the Donor Deficit
Developed in 2008, Decreasing the Donor Deficit aims to raise awareness of cancer treatment by bone marrow transplantation and to recruit new donors.
