Field Flow Fractionation and Light Scattering: Column-Free Size Separations Combined with Mass, Size, and Composition Characterization

The Center for Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine will host a  demonstration of the newly acquired Eclipse DualTec AQ and how field flow fractionation and light scattering can be applied to your research.

Light scattering methods such as dynamic light scattering (DLS) and static light scattering (SLS) non-destructively determine molecular size and molar mass. The highest resolution measurements use size separation prior to light scattering to determine size distribution and mass distribution information. The most popular approach combines size exclusion chromatography with multi angle light scattering (SEC-MALS). However, column-based sizing is often problematic for large nanoparticles, sheer sensitive materials, branched polymers, and samples that are retained on the column matrix. Field Flow Fractionation (FFF) is a column-free size separation approach suitable for challenging samples, using laminar flow to resolve particles y size. We will review both FFF and light scattering concepts and key applications for macromolecule and nanoparticle characterization.
