Objectives:

  1. Explain how immigration law and access to affordable healthcare are inextricably entwined.
  2. Explain how immigration status can work as a barrier to timely accessing affordable care.
  3. Explain how the creation of medical/legal partnerships that focus on providing how immigration legal services can help overcome the barriers of described in objective 2 above.

Charles “Shane” Ellison is the Deputy Executive Director and Legal Director for Justice For Our Neighbors-Nebraska where he oversees the provision of legal services in Nebraska and western Iowa. He is also one of four Regional Attorneys for National JFON where he provides technical assistance to site attorneys and leadership across the country.
Shane graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Trinity College, and cum laude from Hofstra University School of Law with a concentration in International Law. After law school, he worked in the New York Asylum Office, within the Department of Homeland Security, where he adjudicated asylum claims and provided training to Asylum Officers on developing areas of asylum law. In February 2011, Shane relocated to Nebraska to join JFON-NE. He is licensed to practice law in New York, Nebraska, the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Shane is also an adjunct professor at Creighton University School of Law where he teaches immigration law.  He frequently presents on immigration law matters at both regional and national conferences.

Shane is the former Chair of the Nebraska State Bar Association’s Immigration Law Section and is currently on the Section’s Executive Committee.  He also serves as the Chicago Asylum Office Liaison for the Iowa/Nebraska Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.  He is on the Board of Directors for the Refugee Empowerment Center and the National Board of Immigration Lawyers.
